From the editor

This first issue has 30 stories from 29 gyms in 12 metro areas, from Halifax to Victoria: 9 new sets and resets, and 21 events, from socials and clinics to competitions.

A note on where these come from. Every new set in this issue reached us through a gym's own Instagram post; gym websites mostly list events, so this week leans on events. Where a longer story comes from a gym's Instagram post, that post is the picture; the briefs, and stories from gym websites, use an illustrative photo instead.

We also cut. When a gym posted the same comp or reset more than once, you get one piece that tells the whole series, and items we could not write about honestly stayed out. Toronto and Montreal carry the most stories, 11 and 7. Ottawa–Gatineau, our home chapter, sits this one out: nothing new came through from its gyms this week.

Use the vibe check below to bring the stories that fit you to the top. Gyms change their walls all the time; this is what we found this week.

Twenty new problems every Tuesday, if you know which gym to visit

Seven Bays is rotating a fresh reset between its three Halifax gyms each week, ending with a wrap-up comp in Dartmouth on October 31.

If you climb in Halifax, the newest problems in town now run on a timetable. Seven Bays Bouldering is in season 4 of its Progression Session: every Tuesday for six weeks, one of its gyms gets a reset of 20 boulders, and the reset moves from Dartmouth to Gottingen to Bayers Lake and back again.

The first lap is done. Dartmouth went first on September 15 and Gottingen followed on September 22. On September 29 it was Bayers Lake's turn, a full island reset the gym showed off in a reel. The second lap is still ahead of you: Dartmouth on October 6, Gottingen on October 13 and Bayers Lake on October 20.

Each reset spans the yellow to white circuits, which our listing reads as roughly V0 to V5. There is a twist: every problem gets a random number and tape that matches its holds rather than its circuit, so you judge a climb by climbing it, not by its colour band.

The season closes with a wrap-up competition at Dartmouth on October 31. Until then, Tuesday is the day the freshest set of the week goes up.

Café Bloc has reset its slab wall from top to bottom. There are about ten new problems, and the point of all of them is balance and learning to trust your toes on small holds.

If footwork is the part of your climbing you want to fix, this is the set for it. You will find it at 1209 Boulevard Saint-Laurent in Montreal.

It is not the only new set there. Café Bloc finished resetting its main wall on September 15, and on September 29 it announced the last reset of the year for its terrace wall, where the hammocks are still out and the beer is discounted on Friday nights.

A guest setter took over the Loft at Pinnacle Indoor Climbing and put up seven brand-new boulder problems, with no grades on any of them. The challenge was to climb them, decide the grades yourself, pick your favourite and the hardest, and suggest a name.

You did not need to be an expert; the gym's point was to trust your own experience. Entries closed on September 27, and Pinnacle said it would announce the winners afterwards.

Every story comes from the gym's own Instagram post or website. An event shows its day when the gym's post or page states it; otherwise you see the day the gym posted. Instagram posts appear through Instagram's own embed; we never copy them. Photos marked illustrative are licensed photographs that do not show the gym in the story.
